I led a 2-day Sound and Ecology workshop for youth at Sanctuary for Independent Media to help them learn how to use professional equipment for their radio show. The kids (TJ and Amandala) led me through a soundwalk of describing what they were hearing on their walk through the neighborhood to bodies of water. I created two text-based soundwalks based on these descriptions as they led me to Ingalls Ave. Boat Launch and also to Piscawenkill Creek.
Piscawenkill Creek Soundwalk (from observations from Amandala)
Start at the Sanctuary for Independent Media 3361 6th Ave, Troy, NY 12181.
Walk south on 6th St. towards Glen Ave.
If you have left a building, the door opens and the cars become more vivid.
Walking down the sidewalk, the sound of a boy practicing his skateboard across the street and boys talking amongst themselves.
Sounds of footsteps. The cars on the busy street are loud.
Make a left onto Glen Ave.
Walking closer to the creek, you can start to hear the sounds of water faintly and birds chirping.
Slipping on small rocks and continue, but safely, down the hill.
Do the sounds of the street seem distant now? Are your ears filled with the sounds of water?
Heading back out of the lush trees...
Rocks under your feet as the sound of water gets quieter.
People in the street. Crickets in the grass are clear now.
We listen more to the birds hiding in the ivy on the sides of buildings.
And we get back to the exact place where we began.
