I led a 2-day Sound and Ecology workshop for youth at Sanctuary for Independent Media to help them learn how to use professional equipment for their radio show. The kids (TJ and Amandala) led me through a soundwalk of describing what they were hearing on their walk through the neighborhood to bodies of water. I created two text-based soundwalks based on these descriptions as they led me to Ingalls Ave. Boat Launch and also to Piscawenkill Creek.
INGALLS AVE BOAT LAUNCH SOUNDWALK (From Observations Made by TJ)
Begin at Sanctuary for Independent Media at 3361 6th Ave, Troy, NY 12181.
Walk down 6th Ave. towards Glen Ave.
The "microphone was like a microscope for the ears" to TJ. Listen as though your ears are observing the everyday sounds up close like your eyes observe through a microscope.
Notice that there is an absence of bees. The bee hive at the garden is gone.
Are there more birds near the gardens? Near the trees?
Listen to one's footsteps on the sidewalk, the crunchy gravel, the swooshing of fabric.
Do you hear any cats or dogs?
Keep walking and listening until you reach Ingalls Ave. Turn Right.
