Displaced Love Calls (2010) - The first of a potential series of guerrilla sound art installations involving a custom-made kit. This kit contains a solar-charged battery to drive 4 small sound speakers with sound played from two mini stereo MP3 players (4 were used in this particular installation). The kit can be locked around a large tree or other stationary object.
Displaced Love Calls is a sound installation in a tree at Mills College. The sounds are recordings of birds from the Amazon rainforest mixed in with a park in NYC and a drone. As the speaker wires were painted to blend with the tree, it was a very subtle piece for just walking by, but once one climbed up and sat on one of the main boughs of the tree, the full quad soundscape was experienced. The sounds played with one's perception of the immediate space, the birds in the nearby trees, and the view of the open field. I would not leave this installation up continuously for more than a couple of days as I believe that it might eventually disrupt the local wildlife for better or for worse. |
