Triangle Lab Artist-Investigator Project Sound Artist, Andrea Williams
Summary: Composer and sound artist, Andrea Williams, has created, Last Line of Defense (working title), a new work that re-activates the Nike Missile Site military base in the Marin Headlands via amplified improvisational sound pieces created from field-recordings from the natural environment and from the military base itself that transforms the audience via their active participation in the playful graphic score.
Audience: My audience would come from the outreach list of the National Parks Service who has already been very helpful and has assisted me with the recording of some sounds from the Nike Missile Site. Also people would come from the Bay Area Sound Ecology group listing, 23five Incorporated, Meridian Gallery, and my own personal listings that involve scientists working in various fields of research. I am interested in combining artists, scientists, urbanists, naturalists, and those who serve or are interested in the military to be the audience, who are also the performers at times due to the score, to all reach a (hopefully) transformative end. Ideally I would be able to direct this transformative piece towards those in the military with PTSD.
50 hours of field recording on-site, editing/composing the score, creating the physical score, rehearsing on-site with rental equipment, re-editing, a 2nd rehearsal with friends as audience members, final unveiling at Nike Missile Site (daytime on a weekend). I am aiming to do this project in a month and a half, ideally in May/June 2013.

Triangle Lab handles the marketing/documentation for the artist?
I am co-director of 23five Inc, a sound art non-profit, and I expect to be able to borrow the multiple monitors and speakers and transducers for the performance. The National Parks Service has already approved this project for the Nike Missile Site and volunteers have let me in privately to record some sounds already, but I could use better recording equipment to get the best sounds outdoors because of the wind and movement taking place on-site.
Future Collaboration: Yes, I would like to share ideas with other performers/artists, ideally dancers and choreographers. However please inform me and ask for my consent before anything is published online or in print. Also if not selected I still plan to attend the 2/28 event, as I would love to meet other artists and hopefully work with art curators on this and other ideas. I have also applied for an artist residency in Stuttgart, Germany for next year where I would create a performance piece for the remaining American Cold War Missile Site in Germany. Thank you, ~Andrea
